Richard L. Mahaffey

Richard L. Mahaffey, 77, of Nashport, Ohio passed away Sunday afternoon, April 29, 2012 at Genesis Good Samaritan Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born September 12, 1934 in Gratiot, Ohio he was a son of the late Carlos E. and Effie May (Buckey) Mahaffey and was a 1952 graduate of Hopewell High School. He is a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church of Zanesville; and a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Bishops Rosecrans Assembly 832. He was a former employee of Mosaic Tile Company and was a Union Carpenter. He was one of the founding partners of Tri-Y, Incorporated construction company. Surviving is his wife of 57 years, Mary Ann (Mattingly) Mahaffey whom he married August 21, 1954; four sons, William (Karen) Mahaffey of Somerset, Ohio, Patrick (Betsy) Mahaffey of Zanesville, Michael Mahaffey of Columbus, Ohio and Brian (Tammy) Mahaffey of Warren, Ohio; three daughters, Ann Marie (Robert) Smeltzer of Nashport, Kathleen (Doug) Brown of Zanesville and Lisa (Michael) Hill of Lubeck, West Virginia; nineteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, James (Iris) Mahaffey of Dowels, Oregon and Robert (Barbara) Mahaffey of Zanesville; two sisters, Margie Leake and Emma Partlow both of Zanesville and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one son, Joseph Mahaffey; two brothers Donald and Sammy Mahaffey and a sister Ruth Marie Mahaffey. Calling hours will be 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at the Dresden Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home, 714 Main Street with Christian Wake services at 8pm and Rosary recited at 8:30pm. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00am Thursday, May 3, 2012 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 144 North 5th Street, Zanesville with Father Jordan Turano, O. P. celebrating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Mattingly Settlement Cemetery, Nashport, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Center, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.
